On The Formation of Disk Galaxies and Massive Central Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose that massive central objects form in the centers of the bars which must develop in young high-surface density galactic disks. Large-scale dynamics shuts off the growth of the central mass before it reaches ∼ 2% of the disk mass at the time, but this mass is sufficient to weaken the bar substantially. Subsequent evolution of the galaxy can either complete the destruction of the bar or cause it to recover, depending upon the angular momentum distribution of later infalling material. We produce massive, fully self-gravitating disks having roughly flat rotation curves which are quite stable. If at least part of the central masses we require constitute the engines of QSOs, then our picture naturally accounts for their redshift dependence, since the fuel supply is shut off by the development of an inner Lindblad resonance. A prediction is that massive objects should not be found in halo dominated galaxies, such as low-luminosity, or low-surface brightness galaxies. Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Mass Function Split by Morphology up to Redshift 1 in the Fors Deep and the Goods–s Fields**
We study the evolution of the stellar mass density for the separate families of bulge–dominated and disk– dominated galaxies over the redshift range 0.25 ≤ z ≤ 1.15. We derive quantitative morphology for a statistically significant galaxy sample of 1645 objects selected from the FORS Deep and the GOODS–S Fields. We find that the morphological mix evolves monotonically with time: the higher the ...
متن کاملCorrelations between Central Massive Objects and Their Host Galaxies: from Bulgeless Spirals to Ellipticals
Recent observations reveal that a majority of galaxies contain a central massive object (CMO), either a supermassive black hole (SMBH) or a compact stellar nucleus, regardless of the galaxy mass or morphological type. The masses of these CMOs correlate tightly with those of the host galaxies, MCMO ≈ 0.002Mgal. Several recent studies argue that feedback from black holes can successfully explain ...
متن کاملMerger History of Galaxies and Disk+Bulge Formation
We discuss the transitions of galaxy morphologies within the CDM paradigm under the assumption of bulge formation in mergers and disk growth via cooling of gas and subsequent star formation. Based on the relative importance of these two competing processes it is possible to make predictions on the expected morphological mix of galaxies. In particular we here discuss the generation of massive di...
متن کاملThe Destruction of Bars by Central Mass Concentrations
More than two thirds of disk galaxies are barred to some degree. Many today harbor massive concentrations of gas in their centers, and some are known to possess supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their associated stellar cusps. Previous theoretical work has suggested that a bar in a galaxy could be dissolved by the formation of a mass concentration in the center, although the precise mass and...
